ABOUT THE ROLE:
This role sits within the Data Operations team that support systems and data production for the wider business. Data is at the core of their business and the team supports the daily operations and production.
This role sits within the wider Data Technology team and you will build data products and systems so that the world's top-performing sovereign wealth fund can achieve its purpose of providing sustainable investments delivering strong returns for all New Zealanders.
The team also creates and maintains high-quality tools that assist with investment decision-making and supports key business initiatives to aid productivity. You will also work closely with Technology Services, Data Services; Business Solutions and Data Analytics teams to ensure services are delivered as efficiently and safely as possible.
This is a newly created role and combines aspects of platform engineering, cloud engineering and data engineering. They are in the phase of adopting the new data platform and have a modern data suite they have introduced.
You’ll be ensuring the optimal performance, availability, and reliability of the Guardians' data platforms, including the new IDAP platform.
This role involves maintaining existing systems, supporting the transition to IDAP, and driving operational excellence through automation, monitoring, and user support.
The ideal candidate will take a pragmatic approach towards optimizing processes, demonstrating leadership and ownership in their role.
Decisions are constantly being made around best practices however in the practical implementation, the best solution is not always the right solution. So, we are looking for someone who takes a pragmatic approach towards optimization of processes.
The key modern data suite is Snowflake. ADF, Coalesce & Precisely.

Key responsibilities:
- Support the Data Operations team in maintaining the health of the Data Platform, addressing issues proactively to ensure peak performance and reliability.
- Maintain data encryption, access controls, and authentication processes.
- Collaborate with the Cloud Operations team to integrate data platform capabilities and enhance team skills.
- Implement performance improvements and expand platform capabilities.
- Address escalated work requests and enhancements as required.
- Help create and manage maintenance schedules for the Data Technology team.
- Support development teams in deploying new changes through a structured release process.
- Serve as the subject matter expert on Data Platform capabilities, assisting team members with queries and issues.
- Provide training and guidance to users to optimize their use of the Data Platform.
- Implement monitoring tools and reports to track platform performance, usage, health, cost, user activity, and areas for improvement.
- Share knowledge and insights through workshops, training sessions, and documentation.
- Offer technical leadership and maintain internal documentation for Data Technology components.
- Advise on application security, licensing, upgrades, backups, and disaster recovery.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in a data-focused role.
- Strong analytical skills with a structured approach to problem-solving and process design.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Knowledge of capital markets is desirable; asset management or buy-side experience preferred.
- Experience with automated build and release pipelines, especially TFS, Terraform, and Azure DevOps Pipelines.
- Familiarity with agile methodologies such as Scrum and Kanban.
- Experience with scripting languages like PowerShell, Bash, and JavaScript.
- Understanding of database principles and experience with Microsoft SQL Server, SnowFlake, or similar systems.
- Knowledge of data pipeline technologies such as SSIS, ADF, and Coalesce.
- Ability to take initiative, work under pressure, and maintain focus through proactive planning and organization.
- Proven ability to manage and optimize data platforms for high performance and reliability.
- Collegial and constructive approach, with strong internal and external relationship-building skills.
