A Day in the Life of a BrightSpark Recruiter: Josh Edwards

Josh is one of the newest members of our team, bringing with him a wealth of life experience from across the globe. Growing up in Luton, Josh always had a curiosity about living abroad. His first big move was to the US, where he explored life stateside. However, after some time, he returned to the UK, only to quickly realize that his desire for life abroad hadn’t faded.

It was around this time that his brother, who was living in New Zealand, kept raving about how great life was on this side of the world. Intrigued by the idea, Josh decided to take the plunge and give New Zealand a try. Since making the move, he hasn’t looked back and has fully embraced the Kiwi lifestyle.

How Do You Start Your Day?

Josh's day kicks off early—5 a.m. to be exact (though the snooze button occasionally wins). First up, he lets his new puppy, Jet, out of his crate, who promptly claims Josh's warm spot in bed. After that, it's off to the gym by 5:30 a.m. for a workout. Once he's energized, it's coffee and breakfast with his partner, Steph, and Jet, discussing the day's plans to make sure everything's covered. Finally, Josh gears up for work, hops on the bus into town, and listens to some '90s hip-hop to set the mood for the day ahead.

What Sets You Apart From Other Recruiters?

Josh believes that while recruiters are obligated to serve their clients, it’s equally important to go above and beyond for candidates. A standout example is when one of his candidates needed to move from Auckland to Hamilton for a job opportunity. After securing two successful interviews, the client wanted to meet the candidate in person before making a final decision. But there was a hurdle—the candidate didn't drive and was short on funds for the trip.

Determined not to let this stand in the way, Josh took matters into his own hands. He picked up the candidate at 7 a.m., drove him to the 9 a.m. interview, and got him there early. The candidate didn’t have to spend a cent or miss a day's pay, and he nailed the interview. Fast forward to today, and that candidate just celebrated a year at the company, now happily settled in Hamilton. For Josh, this kind of commitment to his candidates is what truly sets him apart.

What Are the Most Challenging Aspects of Your Job?

For Josh, one of the toughest parts of being a recruiter is when multiple great candidates are competing for the same role. Letting down the ones who don’t make the cut is never easy. However, he handles it with care, always providing constructive feedback. He ensures that candidates know why someone else was chosen, what they can work on, and also shares positive comments from the client to keep their confidence high for future opportunities.

What’s Your Favourite Part About Working for BrightSpark?

Josh values the strong emphasis BrightSpark places on doing things the right way. No one cuts corners here—there’s a clear process to ensure that both clients and candidates receive top-notch service. And it pays off, as reflected in the glowing feedback they consistently receive. Of course, Josh is also quick to point out the incredible team and mentors he works with, making it all the more enjoyable.

What’s Your Favourite Lunch Meal?

Sometimes, Josh gets halfway through the day and realizes only one thing will do—a Crunchwrap Supreme. He admits it might feel a bit "illegal" to indulge, but when that craving hits, nothing else compares.

What Sparks You Up When You Aren’t Recruiting?

Outside of work, Josh's world revolves around football. Whether he’s watching Tottenham raise his hopes only to dash them (again) or playing alongside his brother on a Sunday afternoon, football is his true passion. Most days, if he’s not recruiting, you’ll find him immersed in the Beautiful Game.

Josh's story is a great example of the dedication and passion that BrightSpark recruiters bring to their work every day. Whether he's driving candidates to interviews or indulging in his love for football, Josh approaches everything with energy and commitment—qualities that make him a standout recruiter.
